Porsche Taycan Phone Mount / Holder
The best Porsche Taycan phone mount, charger and holder?
Requirements
- Fits nicely within the 'cockpit'
- No damage or marking the leather interior
- Won't move during journeys and spirited driving
- Nice quality feel, OEM look if possible
- Wireless phone connection and charging
The search
From an initial search there wasn't a product that fit the bill, plenty of recommendations on the Taycan Forum for the 'ProClip' which clipped onto the side of the centre console - surely this leaves a mark? It also felt like a bit of an addon.
Along came a post of a custom Taycan phone mount creation stuck to the centre console lower screen, but this lacked wireless phone charging, I didn't dislike the attachment method - there's load of dead space around the screen, you get a perfect mounting surface, no damage to the leather - worth a shot.
The build
We have a 3D printer available to us, a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon, very handy. Apple wireless magnetic charging discs are relatively low priced, easy to source and come with a nice braided cable. First step, find a 3D model that could house the Apple charging disc, then find a way to mount it to a pad to attach to the centre console.
- Apple MagSafe mount with a 17mm Male Ball joint from 'The Reverse Engineer' on printables.com
- A female 17mm ball joint socket by 'chronicity' on MakerWorld.com
Adaptation
The MagSafe mount was adapted to offset the male ball joint - so when the phone is in position it doesnt cover the centre console screen or functionality. We could make the MagSafe wire leave the top of the print and loop around the centre console (tucking into the seam of the leather) and into the armrest console for the charging port.
The female ball joint socket had the holes filles in and the mounting surface reduced in size, so it fit perfectly in the dead space of the centre console screen.
Mounting to the screen with some 3M foam pad prevented any scratching and should be easily removable in the future, leaving no trace.
Conclusion
- Looks smart, fits nicely into the position of the Taycan cockpit
- Phone always charging when on the mount
- Phone secure, doesn't fall off with stop/start and fast corners
- 3D printing allowed quick iterations to get the fit just right, and adapt already created parts from fellow printers.
- The ball joint male/female interaction worked well, although the screw to tighten the joint doesnt tightend enough - it can still slip if you move it around.
- The next iteration may be a full fixed position without the ball joint itself.
- I could only source a white MagSafe charger - a black one with a black cable would look even slicker!
