Porsche Taycan Turbo Sport Turismo - Optional extras are worth it?
First thoughts for 1 month ownership - amazing! Here's an overview of which of the optional extras we think are worth it and those we aren't sure on yet.
Heads-Up Display (HUD)
Worth it. The Taycan Turbo feels like a rocket ship, the HUD is such a handy tool to keep an eye on the speed whilst your eyes are locked to the road ahead. Current speed and speed limit are really handy to see at all times, as is the driver assist functions and whether they are active (Innodrive, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist etc).
The navigation isn't the easiest to understand - usually sat-navs keep the car positioned at the bottom pointing upwards, you can then orient the directions easily to your surroundings. The HUD nav will often have the map seemingly positioned in a format that isn't intuitive (diagonal?) so it's much harder to work out the correct turning and orientation.
Variable Light Panoramic Roof
Questionable. We've only had the car 1 month through the wetest of UK winters, no need to dim the light any further! Maybe we'll enjoy this much more when the sun is out and our heads are burning. It'll be nice to block out direct sun i'm sure.
The film used to block out the light leaves a milky semi-opaque layer to the whole panoramic roof. This drawback seems like a cruical flaw, the whole point of the panoramic roof is unobstructed views of nature all around - this seems sub-optimal. So far I wouldn't option this again.
Rear Wheel Steering
Incredible. It's only a few degrees of extra turning on the rear wheels, but it feels like the Taycan estate turns on the spot. It's quite a length car and some of the u-turns we've done would have been hell in a fixed rear axle variant.
It does take some getting used to for parallel parking, trying to cautiously park to avoid any wheel rash. When putting the wheel into full lock at the end of the parallel park, to bring the front of the car in, I find myself playing chicken and always turning back too early, leaving me a good distance from the curb.
Porsche Logo Puddle Lights
Overpriced, but they make me smile everytime I open the door! Bright enough to light up the floor enough to see what you're about to step into.
Porsche could have added some dynamic movement to the light, similar to how the headlights move as they come on - that would add something a bit extra!
Porsche Crest on Head Rests
Similar to the puddle lights, not something you see very often, but they are such a nice touch and really make the interior come together. Maybe they should be the default and not an optional extra.
18-Way Adjustable Seats
Super comfortable so far, we're still awaiting some good distance road trips.
Surround view camera for reversing
Really handy to keep aware of all surroundings when squeezing through gaps. The reverse camera isn't great, this helps somewhat, but it can be a bit nausiating reversing with just the screens and without mirrors - something we need to get used to!
Electric Charger Doors
The extra element near the charger doors for the touch-sensitive button really looks great and add something to the front design. Cars without this look a little more plain, even though the motorised door isn't any extra help really!
Sports Design Package
Cost aside, I think Taycans with the sports design pacage look better than those without, adding that extra aggressive look and complimenting the already beautiful car design.
Electric Sport Sound
My partner hates listening to it when we're in the car and I often agree, its nice to drive in the peace and quiet (I rarely listen to music whilst driving). There is something fun about putting the car into Sports+, the noise turning on and it's hard not to smile and enjoy the extra atmosphere the sounds can bring!
Chrono Package
It's great to have the extra settings to switch the car between, I think the Taycan is missing something without it, aesthetically, I haven't driven one without it.
Sub-Second Clock
It looks nicer than the digital, but it's missing something, the hands don't illuminate at light and it isn't the easiest thing to read. Form over function, but there are plenty of other clocks to read.
That's my 2-cents so far, such a fantastic car!
